Throwback: Kick-Off Event

We are very grateful for the input of our speakers! Watch the video about Fabienne’s experiences and about how the topic of racism is dealt with in the Austrian education system.

Fabienne Schantl works as a teacher for English and History at the Mittelschule Strallegg. As the topic and impacts related to racism are very important to her, she tries to include them in her lessons. In 2020, she started BlackLivesMatter project with her fourth-grade pupils. The aim of the project was to raise awareness for the topic of racism and the fact that racism is not only a concern in the U.S., but also here in Austria. Overall, the project was supposed to say: Even if you don’t feel that racism affects you, use your voice, don’t look away and talk about it!

Fabienne Schantl arbeitet als Lehrerin für Englisch und Geschichte an der Mittelschule Strallegg. Da das Thema und die Auswirkungen von Rassismus eine Herzensangelegenheit von Fabienne sind, versucht sie dies in ihren Unterricht zu integrieren. In 2020 startete sie ein BlackLivesMatter-Project mit ihren Schüler*innen einer vierten Klasse. Ziel des Projekts war es, das Bewusstsein für das Thema Rassismus und die Tatsache zu schärfen, dass Rassismus nicht nur in den USA, sondern auch hier in Österreich ein Problem darstellt. Die zentrale Aussage war: Auch wenn ihr nicht das Gefühl habt, dass Rassismus euch selbst betrifft, benutzt eure Stimme, schaut nicht weg und sprecht darüber!
